If you are finding it difficult to find models to pose for you, one sure way to get some images is to attend a show where photography is allowed.
I have attended several events both here in Switzerland and abroad. Normally they are a crush of humanity as every man (and sometimes woman) in the audience struggle to get an image. A bit of preparation will ensure that it goes as smoothly as possible and that your pictures stand out from the mediocre.
Firstly, know the venue. It's no use turning up ten minutes before the show starts. Look for a good vantage point, taking into account where the lights are and where the models will be parading or dancing.
Position yourself at the front of the stage or at the side near the front. This way, you will have a (hopefully) neutral background.
Have your ideal camera / lens combination ready. A lens with a good zoom range is recommended as it's annoying to be rummaging through your camera bag for a wider or longer lens as the action unfolds in front of you.
Try and anticipate where the model will be. This helps if you are using a compact camera with a delay between focussing and firing the shutter. Normally there is a mark on the floor where the model will stop, maybe turn and head back. Pre-focus on this mark and hold it until he / she arrives then continue to press the shutter button all the way. This will ensure that your camera doesn't hunt to focus or fire as the model is on their way back to the dressing room.
Using a moderate telephoto lens, try and get closeups of the model, preferably without a distracting background
After the show, it is always my method to give a cd of the pictures to the show organiser. The last time I did this he placed a link on his website and I had 2500 visitors to my website in two weeks. Also make available a couple of CD's for the models themselves.
Pick the best pics and use them for your portfolio
